17% Haven’t Filed Their Income Taxes Yet
Today is Tax Day, and although the deadline was pushed back three days, 17% of Americans still have not filed their income taxes.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 77% of Adults have filed their taxes. That’s up 22 points from three weeks ago. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
Just before Tax Day last year, 22% of Americans still had not filed their income taxes, while 71% had already met the deadline.
Of those adults who have not filed their taxes yet, 44% still plan to do so on time. Thirty-four percent (34%) plan to get an extension, while 23% are not sure which course they'll follow. Last year, only 19% planned to get an extension, and 60% said they would file by the deadline.
Among all Americans, just under half (48%) say they will get a refund. Twenty-three percent (23%) believe that they’ll owe money, and 18% plan to break even. These findings show little change from last year.
