60% Favor Building Keystone Pipeline

Completion of the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada to Texas remains on hold, but most voters continue to support the building of the pipeline and believe it will be good for the economy.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 60% of Likely U.S. Voters at least somewhat favor building the Keystone XL pipeline, including 33% who Strongly Favor it. Just 22% oppose construction of the pipeline, with eight percent (8%) who are Strongly Opposed. Eighteen percent (18%) are not sure.  (To see survey question wording, click here).

Health Care Law Has Already Lost in Court of Public Opinion

A week after President Obama’s health care law was passed, 54% of voters nationwide wanted to see the law repealed.  Now, as the Supreme Court is set to issue a ruling on the law’s constitutionality, the numbers are unchanged: 54% want to see the law repealed.

In polls conducted weekly or biweekly for over two years since the law's passage in March 2010, the numbers have barely moved. In fact, for more than a year before the law was passed, a similar majority opposed its passage.

The dynamics have remained the same throughout as well. Most Democrats oppose repeal, while most Republicans and unaffiliated voters support it. Older voters, those who use the health care system more than anyone else, favor repeal more than younger voters. The number who Strongly Favor repeal has remained over 40%, while the number Strongly Opposing has remained in the 20-something percent range.

Most voters have consistently expressed the view that the law will hurt the quality of care, drive up costs and increase the federal deficit. They also don’t like the government ordering people to buy health insurance and don’t think the Constitution permits that anyway.

This strong and consistent opposition led Scott Rasmussen to conclude in a recent syndicated newspaper column that the “health care law is doomed regardless of what the court decides.”

Arizona Voters Blame Government, Employers for Illegal Immigration

Arizona is at the forefront of the national debate over stopping illegal immigration, but voters in the state are more likely to blame those who encourage the immigrants than those who come here illegally.
A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in Arizona finds that 42% are angry about current immigration policy, and another 33% are mildly frustrated by it. 57% Say Constitution Should be Left Alone

As Independence Day nears, most Americans still believe the U.S. Constitution should be upheld and left as is.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 57% of American Adults think the Constitution should be left alone, although that's down from 63% last year.  Thirty-nine percent (39%) think the Constitution needs some minor changes, and just three percent (3%) think it needs major changes.  Though the option was given, no one thinks the United States should scrap the foundational document and start over. 58% Think Federal Government Encourages Illegal Immigration

Most voters continue to believe the federal government encourages rather than discourages illegal immigration.

53% Say Neither Party Represents American People

Most voters think for the first time that Republicans have a plan for the future, but they remain more divided over whether the same is true of Democrats. However, more voters than ever believe neither party represents the American people.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 54% of Likely U.S. Voters now believe the Republican Party has a plan for where it wants to take the nation. That’s up 19 points from 35% in February 2010 and the first time a majority of voters has said that of either major party. 77% Oppose More U.S. Help to Bail Out Europe

Americans agree Europe’s economic problems are worsening but feel more strongly than ever that the United States should do nothing more to help its longtime allies recover. 

Just six percent (6%) of American Adults believe the economic situation in Europe is getting better. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 70% think the continent’s economic woes are getting worse, while 16% say they are staying about the same. 55% Want U.S. Supreme Court to Uphold Arizona Immigration Law

Most voters still want an immigration law like Arizona’s in their own state and hope the U.S. Supreme Court upholds the legality of the Arizona law this week.  The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 55% of Likely U.S. Voters would like to see the Supreme Court uphold the law that Arizona adopted to reduce illegal immigration in the state. 63% Believe U.S. Society is Fair and Decent

Voters now have a more positive view of American society than they have had for the past couple of months.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 63% of Likely U.S. Voters now feel U.S. society is generally fair and decent, up from 57% last month and 60% in April.  May was the first time the finding had fallen into the 50s since December 2008.

22% Believe Government Has Consent of Governed

Democrats are happier with the status quo than Republicans and voters not affiliated with either of the major parties when it comes to the current Congress and the federal government.

One of the central tenets of the Declaration of Independence is that governments derive “their just powers from the consent of the governed.” Only 22% of the nation’s likely voters believe the government today has such consent.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds a wide partisan gap on the question. Democrats are evenly divided as to whether or not the government has the consent needed for legitimacy. Race for New Hampshire Governor Is Wide Open

The race to be New Hampshire’s next governor has no clear favorite at this early stage.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely New Hampshire Voters finds the top Republican hopefuls – attorney Ovide Lamontagne and former State Representative Kevin Smith – running neck-and-neck with former Democratic State Senator Jackie Cilley and only slightly ahead of another Democratic hopeful, ex-state Senator Maggie Hassan.

But 20% to 25% of voters in the state like some other candidate or are undecided in every case. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

30% Say U.S. Doesn't Spend Enough on National Security

Voters nationwide continue to have mixed feelings about how much the United States spends on national security, but most don’t think it’s necessary to spend three times as much as any other nation.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Voters shows that 31% believe the United States spends too much on the military and national security, while just as many (30%) say it doesn’t spend enough money in this area. Rubio’s Favorables Are Rising Among Independents

Florida Senator Marco Rubio’s name recognition is on the rise with increasing mention of him as a possible running mate for Mitt Romney. His favorables are up nationally, especially among independent voters.

Forty-two percent (42%) of Likely U.S. Voters now share a favorable view of the first-term Republican senator, while 31% view him unfavorably. Twenty-eight percent (28%) are undecided. This compares to favorables of 35% and unfavorables of 28% in early April, with 37% undecided.

The new findings include 22% with a Very Favorable opinion of Rubio and 11% with a Very Unfavorable one. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

81% Say Congress Listens More to Party Leaders Than to Voters

Voters continue to believe overwhelmingly that members of Congress listen more to their party leaders than to those they represent but get reelected anyway because election rules are fixed.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just eight percent (8%) of Likely U.S. Voters think the average member of Congress listens most to the voters he or she represents. Eighty-one percent (81%) disagree and say the average legislator listens most to his or her party leaders in Congress. Eleven percent (11%) are not sure. 71% Favor Work Permits for Young Illegal Immigrants in Certain Circumstances

Most voters don’t think the government is aggressive enough in deporting illegal immigrants but agree with President Obama’s decision to allow young people brought here illegally who meet certain criteria to avoid deportation.

52% Want U.S. Supreme Court to Overturn Obama’s Health Care Law

The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule by the end of this month on the constitutionality of President Obama’s health care law, and most voters hope the law is overturned.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 52% of Likely U.S. Voters would like to see the Supreme Court overturn the health care law. 53% in Wisconsin Now Approve Of Governor Walker’s Job Performance

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s approval ratings are up slightly following his victory in the state’s June 5 special recall election. Fifty-three percent (53%) of Likely Voters in the Badger State now at least somewhat approve of the job Walker is doing as governor, according to a new Rasmussen Reports statewide telephone survey.  Forty-seven percent (47%) disapprove of his job performance.  Those figures include 45% who Strongly Approve and 39% who Strongly Disapprove.  (To see survey question wording, click here.)

40% Think Holder Should Resign As Attorney General

The Justice Department’s Fast and Furious operation was conceived as a way to catch illegal gun runners but instead put guns in the hands of Mexican drug criminals.  Congress wants to know why and has been battling with Attorney General Eric Holder for more information. A sizable number of voters now think Holder should resign.

In fact, a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 27% of Likely U.S. Voters oppose Holder’s resignation. Forty percent (40%) are in favor of the attorney general stepping down, but another 33% are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

72% Say Media Hurts National Security When They Release Secret Documents

In response to news outlets publishing top secret national security information, lawmakers in Congress are drafting legislation to limit access to such information and to create new penalties for revealing it. Seventy-two percent (72%) of Likely U.S. Voters say when media outlets release secret government documents, they are hurting national security.  A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that only 14% believe the media is providing a public service when it releases that information.  Another 15% are not sure.  (To see survey question wording, click here.)

62% Would Rather Be Called Good Citizen Than Patriot

More voters than ever would rather be called a good citizen than a patriot, but a plurality thinks they’re really one and the same.

Sixty-two percent (62%) of Likely U.S. Voters would rather be called a good citizen, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. This finding has been on the rise since May 2010 when 52% said they’d rather be called a good citizen. Fifty-seven percent (57%) said the same in May of last year.

Twenty-five percent (25%) now would rather be called a patriot, but 13% are not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
