29% Have Already Filed Their Income Taxes

The downward trend of early tax filers continues, with only 29% of Americans saying that they have already filed their income taxes.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that 66% have not filed yet. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

While showing little change from 30% last year at this time, the number who say they’ve already filed is down from 33% in February 2009 and 43% in early March 2008.

Most (88%) say they will file by the April 15 deadline, although that’s down slightly from 94% last year. Five percent (5%) think they will get an extension.

Forty-three percent (43%) of Americans expect to get a tax refund this year, up five points from last year but below results found the year before. Eighteen percent (18%) say they will owe money. Twenty-five percent (25%) expect to break even, while another 15% are not sure.

Perhaps not surprisingly, 73% of adults who have already filed expect a refund.
