White House Watch: Trump Bests Harris One-on-One
Senator Kamala Harris of California is no threat to President Trump in a new White House Watch hypothetical 2020 matchup.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 47% of Likely U.S. Voters choose Trump, while Harris earns 42% support. Twelve percent (12%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
Forty-one percent (41%) share a favorable opinion of the freshman senator from California who also has served as the state’s attorney general. Forty-three percent (43%) view her unfavorably. This includes 14% with a Very Favorable opinion and 29% with a Very Unfavorable one. Sixteen percent (16%) don’t know enough about Harris to offer even a soft opinion of her.
By comparison, 27% ventured no opinion of South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, while five percent (5%) each had no opinion of former Vice President Joe Biden and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. Biden edges Trump in a White House Watch matchup; Sanders and Buttigieg lose. But name recognition is the name of the game at this early stage of the contest for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Given the large number of candidates entering the race for next year’s Democratic nomination, Rasmussen Reports has opted to run a series of matchups over two-week cycles as the contest continues to develop. These longer cycles mean the matchup findings will be based on 5,000 respondents rather than the usual 1,000 for our regular surveys, and they lower the margin of error. Sixty-eight percent (68%) of Democrats – and 63% of all voters - think Democrats are likely to choose a woman or a person of color to be their 2020 nominee.
Blacks are far more likely than whites and other minority voters to have a favorable view of Harris who is African-American. Sixty-eight percent (68%) of blacks support Harris in the matchup with Trump, compared to 37% of whites and 41% of other minorities.
Trump gets 80% of the Republican vote and leads among unaffiliated voters by 10 points when Harris is his opponent. Harris earns 72% of the vote from her fellow Democrats.
Congressional Democrats seem to be in an impeaching mood these days, but voters think their threats against Trump, Attorney General William Barr and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh are going nowhere.
Americans tend to favor Democratic presidential hopeful Cory Booker’s idea of a federal gun license, even though most don’t trust the federal government with gun laws and don’t expect Booker’s plan to reduce gun crime.
