White House Watch: De Blasio Is Easy Win for Trump
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, a recently announced candidate for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, has some work to do if he’s going to be competitive with President Trump.
The latest Rasmussen Reports White House Watch national telephone and online survey finds Trump earning 46% support among Likely U.S. Voters in a hypothetical 2020 matchup with de Blasio. The New York City mayor picks up 38% of the vote, but a sizable 16% are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
Twenty-six percent (26%) don’t know enough about de Blasio to venture any kind of opinion of him which emphasizes the importance of raising his name recognition on the campaign trail. Twenty-eight percent (28%) view de Blasio favorably, 46% unfavorably, with only six percent (6%) who share a Very Favorable opinion versus 30% with a Very Unfavorable one.
In previous White House Watch surveys this year, former Vice President Joe Biden is the only Democrat who beats Trump decisively.
Given the large number of candidates entering the race for next year’s Democratic nomination, Rasmussen Reports has opted to run a series of matchups over two-week cycles as the contest continues to develop. These longer cycles mean the matchup findings will be based on 5,000 respondents rather than the usual 1,000 for our regular surveys, and they lower the margin of error. The survey of 5,000 Likely Voters was conducted May 26-30 and June 2-6, 2019 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC.
In Rasmussen Report’s latest matchup of the seven most prominent Democrats in the race for their party’s nomination, Biden is the clear leader, with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders a distant second. Just three percent (3%) of Democrats think de Blasio should be the nominee.
In the matchup with de Blasio, Trump earns 79% of the Republican vote and leads by 10 points among voters not affiliated with either major political party. But one-quarter (23%) of unaffiliateds are undecided. De Blasio has just 63% support among his fellow Democrats, with one-in-five (19%) undecided.
As in most matchups, Trump leads among men and those 40 and over. The Democrat has the advantage among women and younger voters.
Trump’s monthly approval rating fell in May to 48% after hitting a high for his presidency of 50% the month before.
