White House Watch: Biden Still Beats Trump

Joe Biden may be finding the going a little rougher in his own party, but he’s still the most successful Democrat in a hypothetical 2020 matchup with President Trump.

The latest Rasmussen Reports White House Watch biweekly telephone and online survey finds that Biden bests Trump 48% to 44% among Likely U.S. Voters. This compares to 49% to 44% respectively at the end of March. Seven percent (7%) remain undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Biden, a longtime U.S. senator from Delaware and Barack Obama’s vice president for eight years, picks up 80% of Democrats and holds a three-point lead among voters not affiliated with either major party. Trump earns 80% support among Republicans.

Given the large number of candidates entering the race for next year’s Democratic nomination, Rasmussen Reports has opted to run a series of matchups over two-week cycles as the contest continues to develop. These longer cycles mean the matchup findings will be based on 5,000 respondents rather than the usual 1,000 for our regular surveys, and they lower the margin of error. The survey of 4,500 Likely Voters was conducted June 23-27 and June 30-July 2, 2019 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 1.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC.

Biden is still the leader among the 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls following the party's first debates, although he’s lost notable ground. Bernie Sanders, the clear number two in previous surveys, now runs even with Senators Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren.

Biden still leads Trump among women, those under 40 and minority voters.

Fifty-one percent (51%) of voters view Biden favorably, 45% unfavorably. This includes 19% with a Very Favorable opinion of him and 25% with a Very Unfavorable one. Voters have a slightly more unfavorable view of the former vice president than they did three months ago.

Seventy-seven percent (77%) of Democrats regard Biden favorably, compared to just 27% of Republicans and 46% of unaffiliated voters.

Voters see most of the Democratic presidential candidates as more liberal than they are and rate their agenda as outside the mainstream.

Democrats identify more with Biden than with Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the young firebrand who increasingly seems to be setting the party’s agenda.
